The university is an outgrowth of a Post-Graduate Centre of
Andhra University, which was established in 1967 at Nallapadu area of Guntur and then relocated to Nambur/Kaza area on the east of the city. The Centre gained affiliating university status in 1976, and opened with ten post-graduate courses. The university is named after
Acharya Nagarjuna, the pro-founder of the
Madhyamaka path of
Mahayana Buddhism.

Campus
In addition to its main campus, the university also maintains two University Campuses in
Nuzvid,
Krishna District and
Ongole,
Prakasam District. A total of 44 courses are offered at the three locations. The university affiliates the post-graduate programmes of 292 Colleges/Institutes in
Guntur,
Krishna,
Prakasam and other districts of
Andhra Pradesh. Acharya Nagarjuna University offers a special MBA programme that meets the current industry standards, following signing of partner programs deal with
Central Michigan University
The university is also most notably known for its international exchange programs. Various seminars and symposia takes place within the university to promote international education and research activities on a regular basis.
College of Engineering
A new college for engineering and technology is currently being set up in the main campus of the University
[1]. This is one of many engineering colleges in the Guntur region, but the first one to be managed completely by the Government. AICTE has visited the campus and completed the inspection to award grants and other recognition purposes to asses if it meets the minimum criteria.

The Centre for Biotechnology at Acharya Nagarjuna University was established in year 1994, inaugurated by the then Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, Dr.C.R.Bhatia. The centre is offering two academic programs, M.Sc. (Biotechnology) and M.Tech. (Biotechnology) and also offering research degrees leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Biotechnology. A course on M.Sc. Medical Biotechnology is initiated as a combination program with NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada for the academic year 2007-2008.
